You are a Child of God

My parents split up when I was a kid. I never knew life with a traditionally whole family. I sort of grew up in limbo, traveling back and forth from house to house, not knowing quite where I fit in. Don’t get me wrong; I had two loving parents who wanted me and cared for me, but I still felt out of place.

Maybe you have a similar background or maybe not. Maybe even worse, you grew up feeling unwanted or abandoned. But no matter your how you grew up, the fact remains that you were a child.

What do you think it means to be a child?

To be dependent, to trust, be cared for, loved, part of a family, part of a unit...

Most important, being a child means you belong to someone.
And when you are a child of God, that means you belong to the Someone of someones.

In our world, we see lots of broken people and misfits. There are orphans, outcasts, and odd men out. To them, it may feel like they don’t belong anywhere, let alone to anyOne.

But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. - John 1:12

It says it right there, in the Bible, “all who believe and accept Him, they have the right to be a child of God.” And if you are a child of God, that means you have a place in His family. You are not an odd one out. You are His precious creation and desire of His heart.

So no matter how you grew up, or how you feel today, know this: you belong to God. He invites you to crawl up into his lap, center on Him, and listen to His heartbeat.

  1. Write down a list of the important people in your life. God put you in their life and them in yours for a reason. You are a part of something bigger.
  2. Get involved. It's easy to feel like an outsider when you aren't actively contributing to community. Try a sport, Join a bible study, Volunteer in the nursery.
  3. Remind yourself of your heavenly home. "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ." -Philippians 3:20. You have a heavenly home where you belong until the end of time.
